Thin Mac® and Windows® computers (1) with Thunderbolt™ 3 ports still deliver substantial compute power, but for many, such as professionals in creative fields, the built-in compute power is not enough. Fortunately you don’t have to limit your choices to desktop workstations — consider external solutions. The Sonnet Echo™ Express SEL (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) enables you to connect a single low-profile PCIe card outside the computer. With its PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, this compact expansion system supports a wide range of Thunderbolt-compatible 16Gb and 8Gb Fibre Channel, 40Gb and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, capture and processing cards, Host Bus Adapter SAS and SATA, and RAID controller cards.
Echo Express SEL (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) offers 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3, delivering twice the speed and connectivity compared with Thunderbolt 2 and achieving up to 2750 MB/s PCIe bandwidth, enabling support for 4K video capture and processing cards at high frame rates, as well as 16Gb FC and 10GbE dual-port cards at full performance (2)(3). With support for the most demanding, highest-performance PCIe cards, support for connecting two 4K displays at 60Hz or one 5K display at 60Hz (4), and support for a wide range of Thunderbolt (5) and USB (6) peripherals, Thunderbolt 3 is a leap forward in every respect.
A Small Package, Full Performance
Measuring just 4 inches wide, 8.4 inches long and 2.8 inches tall, Echo Express SEL is ideal for scenarios requiring installation of a single low-profile PCIe card. Many of the most popular Thunderbolt-compatible high-speed network and storage controller cards fit perfectly, and even a BlueFish 444 Epoch 4K Neutron video card can be accommodated.
Thunderbolt 3 — USB-C That Does It All
Echo Express SEL (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports; the first connects it to the computer, while the second supports a daisy-chain of up to five additional Thunderbolt peripherals attached to a single port on the computer. SEL also provides USB 3.1 Gen 2 with up to 10Gbps, meaning you can connect a USB device to the second port using the appropriate cable or adapter. SEL also provides full support for connecting two 4K displays at 60Hz or one 5K display at 60Hz (4). For peripherals requiring additional power, 15 watts are delivered to bus-powered devices.
Smart Design, Inside and Out
Constructed from durable and lightweight aluminum, the external enclosure of Echo Express SEL robustly protects the installed PCIe card. The card is also protected inside — Echo SEL uses a variable-speed fan, temperature-controlled, to provide cooling for the installed card and enclosure components. The fan automatically increases speed as needed to cool the installed card when it’s hot, and slows down when it’s cool. Because Echo Express products automatically power on and off with your computer, there is no power switch in the enclosure, ensuring you don’t waste energy by forgetting to turn it off.
Quiet Operation
Echo Express SEL is designed to be ultra-quiet so it can be used comfortably in noisy environments. The enclosure’s airflow path is specifically engineered to allow the fan to quietly and effectively cool the installed card under any conditions, even during peak load.
Thunderbolt 3 Cable (40Gbps) and ThunderLok 3 Included
Sonnet includes a 0.5 m Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect the Echo Express SEL (Thunderbolt 3 Edition) to your computer, and a ThunderLok 3 cable retention clip from Sonnet (7) to secure the cable to the enclosure. Accidental disconnection can lead to data loss. ThunderLok 3 secures the Thunderbolt cable to the Echo enclosure and is easy to install and use — simply slide it onto one end of the cable, then plug in the connector and secure it to the enclosure by tightening the thumbscrew. Thanks to its unique design, ThunderLok is not mounted to the connector but remains on the cable, so it won’t be lost when not in use.
